Fun Fact
The East River is not a river, and its name did not come from its location east of Manhattan. Technically, it is a tidal strait, a channel connecting two seawater bodies, Upper New York Bay and Long Island Sound. The name came because American colonists used it to travel east.

Permits/Events

Visit Brooklyn Bridge Park's website for more information and to download the permit application.

Permits must be obtained prior to undertaking regulated activities as defined in the Park Rules and Regulations.  Applications to conduct regulated activities or uses must be submitted at least twenty-one (21) days in advance of the planned event, activity or use. All applicants will be charged a non-refundable $25 fee to cover processing costs.

Permit fees are applied directly to the park’s maintenance costs and horticultural upkeep.

Submitting an application does not guarantee you will be granted a permit. Permit fees will be assessed based on the nature of the event.

Permits will not be granted on holidays or holiday weekends.

Permits are required for:

  • A performance, meeting, assembly, contest, exhibit, ceremony, parade, athletic competition, reading, or picnic involving more than 20 people
  • A group activity involving less than 20 people for which specific space within the Park is requested to be reserved or set up is required
  • Commercial photography or film
  • Wedding ceremonies: Pier 1 waterfront promenade and Main Street pebble beach only

Please note:

  • There is no equipment allowed for weddings at Brooklyn Bridge Park (no staging, microphones, tables, podiums, tents, amplified music, etc).
  • You are allowed to bring a maximum of 5 folding chairs for elderly guests.
  • Wedding ceremonies cannot be longer than 1.5 hours and may not have more than 100 guests.
  • Pier 1 waterfront promenade: weddings must occur as a standing event and can not be in front of, or utilize, the Granite Prospect. At all times a path must be maintained on the waterfront promenade that allows for access by the general public.

Brooklyn Bridge Park will begin accepting permit applications for the 2012 season on December 1, 2011.
